First Alert "The Great Escape" Sweepstakes and an important review/giveaway...

Fire Prevention Month -- First Alert "The Great Escape" Sweepstakes

October 9 - 15 is National Fire Prevention Week and we want to share First Alert's "The Great Escape" Sweepstakes with all of you! Before we tell you more about the sweepstakes let us first share some important facts and safety tips with all of you...

One of the most important things you can do for your family is have a fire escape plan. This is very important to my family as we have 2 little boys and you never know when a fire might happen in your home.

First Alert conducted a survey and did you know that a majority (79 percent) of Americans reported having a home escape plan in place in case of a fire or other emergency, but more than half (51 percent) have NEVER practiced it and only 29 percent have only practiced it once!

The National Fire Protection Association recommends planning an emergency escape route and practicing it twice annually, while other fire safety organizations promote monthly drills to improve reaction time in case of an emergency.

It is very important to have a plan and actually practice it with your family to make it effective in the case of an actual fire. Jace and Grady both talked about fire safety at school and it's amazing how much they actually listen and learn - it only takes a few minutes to talk about fire safety with your kids and only a few more to practice a safety plan.

During Fire Prevention Week, First Alert encourages everyone to evaluate your level of preparedness against potential dangers. They encourage you and your family to develop and practice a fire escape plan, plan test drills, install and maintain smoke alarms / CO alarms by testing them regularly and making sure you have enough in your home. They recommend having smoke alarms in and near all bedrooms / sleeping areas and at the top of each staircase. You should also have at least one CO alarm on each level, including the basement, and one in or near every bedroom / sleeping area.

Watch this video as my kids test the alarm for you all to hear...

We really like this smoke / CO alarm. We love that the voice alerts you as well as the very loud beeping. We love that it tells you the type of danger and the location which is very important. It's nice that it tests the levels of carbon monoxide as well as detects smoke. We have a fire escape plan in place but like most have never done a drill since moving in our new house. We are going to practice this not only in the day time but they also recommend you practicing a drill while your kids are asleep which is a great idea! Of course you should tell them before they go to sleep that you are going to be doing this because you do not want to frighten them! Also it's a good idea to tell your kids to wake each other up in case of a fire or assign one person to do this!

If you do not have a Smoke Alarm or Carbon Monoxide Detector we encourage you to purchase one from First Alert - The Most Trusted Name In Home Safety!

Here are a few tips to help you develop an effective fire escape plan from First Alert and NFPA...

  • Involve everyone in our household in developing a plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Identify 2 ways out of each room, including windows and doors. Make sure everyone in the home understand the plan.
  • Install smoke alarms throughout the home and test them monthly. Change batteries every 6 months to ensure proper function. A great day to do this is when set your clocks forwards or backwards for daylight savings time!
  • Choose an outside meeting place (i.e. neighbor's house, a light post, mailbox, or stop sign) a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped.
  • Have everyone memorize the emergency phone number of the fire department and 911. That way any member of the household can call from a neighbor's home or a cell phone once safely outside.
  • Once you're out, STAY OUT! Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building. If someone is missing, inform the fire department dispatcher when you call. Firefighters have the skills and equipment to perform rescues.

Why not take a few minutes today and see what your kids know about fire safety and talk to them about a safe plan for your family - you never know when something like a fire will strike and it's never to late to prepare!

Our Give-a-way & The Great Escape Sweepstakes...

In honor of Fire Safety Week we have teamed up with First Alert and are giving away 1 of their new Combination Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Voice-enabled Child Awakening Alarms. Studies show that children ages 6-10 years of age are awakened more readily by voice, so this new technology provides an increased level of safety. This technologically-advanced alarm uses a loud, pre-recorded and tamper-proof human voice to alert residents in case of smoke or unhealthy levels of CO. It also identifies where smoke or CO is detected in the home, so you can determine the fastest and safest ways out.

First Alert also has a great sweepstakes going on. First Alert is offering it's Facebook Fans the chance to "escape" to the place where it all began -- Chicago, home to First Alert and site of the 1871 Great Chicago Fire, the impetus behind the national observation.

"The Great Escape" sweepstakes will award 1 lucky family with a prize package including roundtrip airfare and hotel accommodations for 4 to experience some of the "hottest" attractions that the Windy City has to offer. In keeping with the sweepstakes' fire prevention theme, the prize package also will include dinner at the Chicago Firehouse Restaurant and tickets to the Lookinglass Theatre's production of "The Great Fire."

To enter, participants must simply "like" First Alert on Facebook Between October 3 and October 31, then register to enter. Existing fans may enter by clicking the sweepstakes tab. Participants may enter once per day!

(Facebook Fans will also have the chance to win 1 of 4 suites of First Alert's new Combination Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Voice Alarms. Each Friday in October, First Alert will give away 4 alarms to a random sweepstakes participant.)

First Alert products range from combination smoke and CO units to smoke alarms with escape lights, along with basic battery-powered products. First Alert smoke and CO alarms are available at national retailers and online. For more information and a complete home safety checklist please visit:
