7 or more hours of sleep per night: A healthy necessity for adults #YouKnowYouNeedSleepWhen

(The Jackson Five Family blog received a complimentary gift card to help facilitate this reader feature. However, all opinions are honest and our own!)

#YouKnowYouNeedSleep when you think it's a good idea to run to your fave coffee shop at almost 9 o'clock at night for a yummy cup of joe. Bad, bad decision. That's what my husband I did last night. It seemed like such a good idea and their newly decorated cups gave us even more reason to drink up and celebrate fall. I had been dragging all day and it definitely gave me a caffeine jitter that kept me up half of the night which isn't helping this morning.

Maybe I wouldn't be so tired if I'd follow the American Academy of Sleep Medicines new recommendation of getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night. At the top of their 'Healthy Sleep Tips' list is DON'T drink coffee any time after lunch. I definitely broke that rule last night and am guilty of many more!

Healthy Sleep Tips

DON'T:

Don't drink coffee any time after lunch, it can lead to tossing and turning all night.
Don't stay up late working on the computer --it prevents us from being able to 'wind down' and fall asleep.
Don't go to bed unless you are sleepy.
Don't read, write eat or watch TV in bed.

DO:

Do try and keep a regular sleep schedule, as you would for your child.
Do make your bedroom quiet, dark and a little bit cool. (It should remind you of a cave)
Do begin rituals that help you relax each night before bed --read a book (not in bed), take a warm bath, enjoy a light snack (again, not in bed).

--------------------------

7 hours of sleep shouldn't be that hard to obtain, but there's a million reasons why we don't get just that. For me it's things like busy nights with the kids, whether it be homework or evening sports it's hard to get them to bed on time and then I  feel like I have five million and one things I need to get done after they are out. The never ending laundry and housework, blogging after hours and of course our cell phones, we have to catch up on the latest gossip through social media and that's easy to do while laying in bed.

After reading some of the benefits of sleep I think I will try and get those 7 hours. One thing I read was getting enough sleep can ward off the common cold, even before it begins. Love that one. I also read that sleep deprivation ages you quicker, I guess that beauty sleep is a real thing :-) and of course the added alertness and energy you get throughout the day after getting enough zzz's should be reason enough to hit the magic number!

You can learn more about the benefits of getting at least 7 hours of sleep by visiting sleepeducation.org or visiting the American Academy of Sleep Medicines website aasmnet.org.

  11. Oh I need more sleep because I am the mother of four beautiful children who don't seem to want to sleep when I do, and my husband works nights, so really it is similar to being a single parent 75% of the time because he is sleeping or working 14 hour shifts!
